ANATOMY OF A SHABBY CHIC LIGHT FIXTURE

Lamps & Lamp Shades Specialties • 22 November 2019

Shabby chic is one of the most popular décor styles not least because it affords you personalization options. The style is built around the idea of decorating with found objects that display their generational charm. That said, shabby chic décor does carry some universal characteristics that help you pull the look together.

An important part of any decorating scheme is the lighting. Light fixtures can go a long way toward completing a look. When it comes to shabby chic, you want lamps and other lights that draw attention. Many light fixture styles can fit shabby chic décor, but below are some ideas of what to look for.

Anatomy of a Shabby Chic Light Fixture

SHABBY CHIC DESIGN BASICS

As noted, the goal of the style is to decorate using mismatched and time-worn furnishings. The overall effect, though, is meant to be a cross between formal and comfortable, a little like an aging sitting room. So ornate décor with distressed finishes are staples of the style.

The dominant color in shabby chic décor is white. Designers typically use cottage gardens as an inspiration for the rest of the palette. So you see cheerful colors such as pink, blue, and green in the décor. However, you can mute the brightness by choosing pastel colors instead of full saturation. Additionally, you see patterns, especially checks, stripes, and, of course, florals.

SHABBY CHIC LAMP BASE

Almost any style of table lamp will work in shabby chic décor, including the traditional gourd and candlestick, as well as Tiffany and novelty shapes. Color-wise, white is especially popular, though you might see some of the delicate flower colors or off-white. A metallic finish or one featuring crystal accenting could also work well. The finish often looks worn.

The key to the shabby chic lamp base is it should be ornate. Expect to see beads, leaves, and other flourishes worked into the design. You might even see floral patterning. Novelty bases within a pastoral theme would be charming. That's not to say a sleek lamp couldn't work in your shabby chic décor; it just wouldn't be as representative of the style.

Shabby chic floor lamps are a little less common. However, if you have need of a floor lamp, look for one with that elaborate detailing in the base. Indeed, the taller base could be a method to work even more ornateness into the lamp style.

SHABBY CHIC LAMPSHADE

When it comes to the lampshade style itself, more is more should be the philosophy. You see all manner of ornamentation including fabric rosettes, beads, lace, tassels, and even doilies. Indeed, many doit-yourself guides exist for decorating your shabby chic lampshade. However, if you favor a more sophisticated approach, consider having one custom-made by lamp experts.

Likewise, if you don't want such an elaborate lampshade, consider using the space to add color and/or pattern. This space would be ideal for checked, striped, or floral patterns. Delicate pink and green shades are also common.

SHABBY CHIC HANGING LIGHTS

Many of the same principles apply to lamps you hang from the ceiling, too, including the color and finish. You see some novelty lights in this space, including those that resemble birdcages and other found items. The goal is to keep the vintage vibe.

Chandeliers are one of the most popular shabby chic lighting options. The more ornate, the better. Think of hanging crystal pendants, curving leaves, and rampant curly-cues. Roses find their way here, too. You often see chandeliers that appear to have been painted with key areas of the paint wearing off.

While shabby chic style celebrates decorating with flea market finds, don't leave your lighting to chance. Instead, combine the décor elements into your unique preferences, and have your light fixtures custom made. Lamps & Lamp Shades Specialties has a wide variety of options for your shabby chic lighting.
